Town of Greenland
Greenland Police Department

 Our Department's History

In 1949 the Greenland Veterans Organization organized a fire department in response to a series of suspicious fires in town. 1950 the Greenland Volunteer Fire Department was established.  The volunteers did not have protective gear or a fire station.  By 1952, the volunteer fire department had a station, pictured at right.  At this time, fires were reported by telephone and volunteers were notified by phoning one another.  Pagers would not be introduced to the Greenland Volunteer Fire Department until the late 1960s.

Almost 60 years later, the Town of Greenland still relies on volunteers for its fire department.  We have over 30 members trained in firefighting, emergency medical services and as first responders.  Our apparatus now includes one hose reel pumper, two engine pumpers, an ambulance and a utility truck.
