2006 Assistance to Firefighters Grant Approval

The Greenland Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded a one-year grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security in the amount of $183,901.00.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) is highly competitive and open to all fire departments in the United States.  The application period for the AFG closed in April, applications were then reviewed by various fire service organization and ranked.  In 2006, over 18,000 applications were submitted, less than 20% of all applicants will receive grant money.  The grant awarded to the GVFD was announced October 6, in the first round of AFG awards!

The primary goal of the AFG is to assist firefighting and emergency response organizations in obtaining critically needed equipment to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.  This grant will be used to purchase new protective and safety equipment for our volunteer firefighters.  The new equipment will be interoperable with the equipment of surrounding fire departments.  The benefits of interoperable equipment include participating in multi-town training drills and assisting in Mutual Aid calls.

The equipment the GVFD will purchase includes

  • Complete sets of turnout gear include bunker pants, jackets, helmets, hoods, gloves and boots.  All new equipment will meet current NFPA and OSHA standards.

  • SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) Air Packs equipped with spare cylinders, a redundant low air alarm, and RIT (Rapid Intervention Team) connections to assist downed firefighters.

  • Electronic firefighter accountability management system to track firefighters inside a building.

  • RIT Pack which enables a Rapid Intervention Team to rescue downed or trapped firefighters.

If you have any questions regarding the AFG, please e-mail the GVFD.
